Learn About Tims Ford Lake

Tims Ford Lake is a reservoir run by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in southern middle Tennessee.

The Tims Ford Lake dam and reservoir was built by TVA in 1971 years after its creation in 1933.  In the mid 1900's, TVA purchased  over one million acres of land for the creation of 34 reservoirs in five of the seven states in the Tennessee Valley region.    

The Tims Ford Lake drove further growth and enabling a variety of businesses and activities to thrive.  Today, the 10,700 acre Tims Ford Lake with over 250 miles of shoreline, is a recreation and fishing haven along with providing a multitude of opportunities in the area.  See below for more details about the Lake Area.

Tennessee Valley Authority The TVA, or Tennessee Valley Authority, was established in 1933 as one of President Roosevelt’s Depression-era New Deal programs, providing jobs and electricity to the rural Tennessee River Valley, an area that spans seven states in the South. The TVA was envisioned as a federally-owned electric utility and regional economic development agency. It still exists today as the nation’s largest public power provider. 

Tims Ford Lake Dam was built by the TVA from 1966 to 1970, stands 175 feet high and 1580 feet long at its crest, and impounds the Elk River for an average of 36 megawatts of hydroelectric power.
