There's something about sweets that just makes you smile.  We chatted with Designer Cakes in Winchester TN 

Personally I smile a bit too much when I look at colorful sugar laden treats -- unfortunately I have an on switch that has a difficult time switching off.  (yes keep the box of cookies away from me).

I had the opportunity to chat with Meredith, the owner of Designer Cakes which is a custom bakery in Winchester TN.  Designer cakes is one of the places to eat in Winchester TN Square - well I saw that loosely depending on your diet.

Designer Cakes in Winchester: How it Started

The Designer Cakes store front has been a business for approximately 20 years - a staple in the Winchester TN Square.  The building itself was built in 1896 though even before that it was a tailor shop.

Around 2010 Designer Cakes bakery was born and set up shop at the location where it is today on the square.  Designer cakes has been owned by four owners, with the current owner Meredith owning it for the past 3 years (June 2020 to be exact).  As we chatted there was a regular flow of folks coming in and purchasing goodies.   

Two of the most popular are the Petit Fours and thick fudgy brownies.

Meredith has always had a love for cooking and baking.  But it was all self taught.  Pinterest and YouTube were her instructors.  Friends were interested, and the passion eventually became a mini business.  She began to sell cakes, cupcakes, and cookies she made out her home.  Eventually expanding into a few prepared meals as well.

The demand indicated a possible business opportunity and Meredith began selling the tasty vittles out of a trailer at the farmers market.  She was good friends with the current owner of Designer Cakes who was interested in transitioning to another job.  Meredith and her husband had talked for years about having their own bakery store front. This was the opportunity!

Meredith kept the same recipes that the previous owner used.  In fact, these were the same original recipes that the original owner and creator of Designer Cakes used.   Meredith also added new items such as cinnamon roles, breads, etc.

So what types of delicacies does Designer Cakes make?  It not just cakes.  They make custom cakes, wedding cakes, cinnamon roles, breads, cookies, cupcakes, fudge brownies, etc.

When asked what her favorite things to make are -- she immediately replied the custom cakes.  Its fun hearing about creating something new and special.  Then seeing the customer faces light up when they see the finished product.

I had to ask about one cake I saw on her Facebook page.  It said, (paraphrased), someone ordered this cake but decided they didn't want it.  Would anyone like to purchase it?

The story was that she had a customer request a short notice cake -- she normally asks for 1-2 weeks in advance but this customer requested a rush for it to be ready the next day.  She made the cake, but when the customer came in they decided they didn't like it and left.  The term "friends don't lie" is actually a quote from the Netflix show, "Stranger Things". The customer must have had a Stranger Things fan in his family.

The most popular item they sell is the strawberry petit four.  I had the opportunity to try one.  Is it tasty / yummy / worthy of a great dessert?    YUM!  Delicious.
